What is ULEZ?
ULEZ stands for Ultra Low Emission Zone. It is an initiative implemented in some cities, notably in London, to improve air quality and reduce pollution caused by vehicles. The ULEZ sets emissions standards that vehicles must meet in order to enter certain designated areas.
In the case of London, the ULEZ was introduced on April 8, 2019. It covers the same area as the Congestion Charge Zone and operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including weekends and holidays. The emission standards set by the ULEZ aim to encourage the use of vehicles with lower emissions and discourage the use of more polluting vehicles.
Within the ULEZ, most vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, and vans, need to meet specific exhaust emission standards, known as the Euro standards. Currently, the minimum requirement for most petrol cars, vans, and minibusses is to meet at least Euro 4 standards, while diesel cars, vans, and minibusses must meet at least Euro 6 standards. Failure to meet these standards results in a daily charge to drive within the ULEZ.

Minimum emission standards
Each vehicle type has a minimum emission standard. You can find your vehicle’s emission standard in your vehicle log book or from your vehicle manufacturer.
To avoid being charged in a clean air zone, your vehicle must meet the following minimum standard:
